Is Upgrading my Computer Memory a Good Move?
02/28/2008
In most cases, the answer would be yes. After all, hard drives and memory can reach a point where the type of work you do is not supported, as it should be. Now, if you use your computer only on occasion, you may not ever need to upgrade the memory but chances are at some point, you will. The more you use your computer, with new programs and operations, the more you will need additional memory. Otherwise, the system boggs down, which is maddening. Considering that various types of memory such as Professional memory, Profile memory, Select memory, Solo memory, and Performance memory are inexpensive and easy to install, it only makes sense to complete the upgrade.
Keep in mind that the amount of system memory you can install will depend on a number of things to include the manufacturer, model of computer, and again, your needs. The most important thing is to make sure you always purchase memory from a reputable source, preferably directly from the manufacturer. Then, choose memory made specifically for the computer you own. Whether you have a Gateway or some other brand computer, be sure to install only the type of memory intended for the computer. With Hewlett Packard’s P1100, you would need P1100 memory For Apple’s Performa, you would choose Performa memory. Then, in the case of the Compaq ProLinea, you would choose ProLinea memory, and nothing else. If you try using an off-brand or memory designed for another computer by the same manufacturer, you will be setting yourself up for all types of problems.
